This week's installment is dedicated to one of the first, if not the first, epic fantasy anti-hero.
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever.
Book one of this ambitious story, Lord Foul's Bane, hit the shelves in 1977. I was only five years old. A mere six years later, at the ripe age of 11, I made my first attempt at reading this series. I barely finished book one and it probably left my young mind scarred.
The Unbeliever series was controversial because of it's unlikely and unlikeable protagonist (you know, the hero) Thomas Covenant. The subject matter of these stories was extremely complex and mature.
I would later read the full first and second series' (both trilogies) twice. There are new books recently released--within the last 10 years--however I have not read them.
The original trilogy is a landmark in fantasy and has helped shape stories we read today. It is still up there as one of my top 10 series of all time.
Have you read the series? What did you think of it?
